Review:
The EP titled "Dormant" delves deep into the captivating themes of growth and transformation, offering listeners a profound exploration of these concepts. Suneater, the band behind this mesmerizing musical creation, showcases their unrivaled mastery of contrasting elements throughout the EP. Kicking off the album with an electrifying burst of energy and guttural vocals, the opening track "Maelstrom" sets the tone for the sonic journey that lies ahead. The pulsating grooves and intricate guitar work on "Deprived" mesmerize the listener, leaving them craving for more.
However, it is the nine-minute composition "Succumb" that truly takes the listener on an unforgettable voyage. With each passing second, this epic masterpiece unravels like a well-crafted story, captivating the audience with its captivating melodies and thought-provoking lyrics. It is an experience that leaves you in awe, as if you were taken on a rollercoaster ride through the depths of your own emotions.
After the intensity of "Succumb," the EP offers a brief respite with the track "Respite." This momentary pause allows the listener to catch their breath and reflect on the profound journey they have just experienced. Closing out the EP, "Dormant" concludes with haunting melodies and a savagely addictive riff that leaves a lasting impression on the listener.
Throughout the EP, Suneater's instrumentation shines brightly, showcasing their skillful and creative approach to music. The impressive guitar work effortlessly weaves intricate melodies and riffs, while the solid rhythm section lays a strong foundation for the entire sound. It is apparent that each member of the band brings their own unique talent and expertise to the table, resulting in a truly harmonious and captivating musical experience.
"Dormant" is not just a collection of songs; it is a testament to Suneater's unwavering dedication and their ability to push the boundaries of their genre. With this EP, they have proven themselves as true innovators, crafting a musical masterpiece that will leave a lasting impact on anyone who listens. It is a sonic journey that demands to be heard, inviting the audience to delve into the depths of their own growth and transformation.
Fortunately, I had the opportunity to gain further understanding of the band and its creative process, and I conducted a brief interview to provide our readers with a more profound exploration of the Dormant - EP.
Interview:
1. The title of your upcoming EP, 'Dormant,' suggests themes of growth and change. Could you share the creative process behind the EP and how these themes influenced your songwriting?
This EP is the first batch of songs written together with a couple of new members in the lineup since our last release - Jacson (bass/vocals) and Harry (drums). It's always an interesting time writing with new members and figuring out the chemistry between band members, but honestly, it felt like the vibe when writing with this current lineup is better than it's ever been.
As far as writing goes, we always write collaboratively. Usually, there's one or two riffs myself or Zach will bring into the rehearsal room, we'll lock in the chemistry of everyone in the room, and that brings out the full arrangement.
Lyrically, there was some unfortunately dark periods going on for Jacson and myself with some big changes in our personal lives, so we explored that in a lot of the songs. Lotsa changes all 'round, I guess!
2. Suneater has masterfully blended contrasting elements of darkness and light, brutality and beauty, within the EP's tracks. Can you tell us more about how you approach crafting such a cohesive sonic experience?
Thank you! Honestly, I think that comes down to our influences musically. All of us are into music which has a lot of contrast and ups and downs. I think if we only played heavy aggressive stuff all the time, we'd lose interest. We try to mix things up and keep things dynamic. Bands like Yob, Neurosis, Mastodon, and Russian Circles are big influences on us.
3. 'Succumb' stands out as an epic masterpiece, taking the listener on a captivating journey through various musical landscapes. How did this nine-minute composition come together, and what emotions or experiences
were you channeling during its creation?
That's a song that Zach (guitar) had the intro and chorus riff written for years, and could never find a happy place for it in a song. We jammed those riffs out with the new lineup and it all fortunately just came together this time around by some stroke of luck. There are ideas/input from all of us on that track.
It gets really weird in the second half with the noise section, but we love it. We've always wanted to try something more abrasive sounding like that. It's probably the most diverse song on the EP.
4. Suneater's technical prowess and creative guitar work shine through in 'Dormant.' Can you share some insights into how you developed the distinctive sound that sets you apart in the sludge and post-metal genres?
Again, thank you. I'm not sure where the sound came from per se, we sit in this weird realm of kind of being sludge, kind of doom, and kind of post-metal but not distinctly any of those genres. It's a good problem to have though.
I think it's a product of the influences we have and again not wanting to pump the same sounding stuff out of every song. We like to keep ourselves on our toes I guess.
5. As Suneater continues to solidify its place in the heavy music scene, what are your future plans, and how do you envision your sound evolving in the coming years?
We did our first East Coast tour this year and it was amazing. It was honestly a bit of a gamble, it could have gone either way but the crowds over there were super receptive and the bands we played with were great people. We definitely plan on touring Australia more over the coming years.
As far as sonically, honestly, we have no idea! We won't know until we're in a room together running through new material. I've been writing a fair bit and I know Zach has some stuff cooking in the kitchen too, so hopefully we'll have new music out sooner rather than later.
